The Meaning Of The Song

To understand the song better i decided that no one could be better to explain it better than Allison Crowe. I searched on google for her official website, it had a link to the contact page. Here i could different ways in which i could contact her, E-mail, mailing lists and her guestbook. I thought that the quickest way to get a reply was to send an email saying:

"Dear Allison, I have recently heard your song angels from your album little light. I love the lyrics and was just wondering what inspired you to write this song? And what is the meaning behind the song? I hope to hear from you soon. Yours sincerely, Hannah Tabor"

In a couple of weeks I received an email back from her:

"Hi Hannah, Thanks for your kind words. The simple answer is, my life inspired me to write the song, and it's just about the crazy things that relationships do, I guess! Sometimes we put our partner above us, and it can be good to remember that we are equals. We have our own worth. We need to accept and love ourselves as much as we do other people. take care, Allison :o)"

This will hopefully help us understand it better as it is from the artists point of view. It will also help us with the ancillary tasks as we can incorporate the original ideas and beliefs behind the song.

Lyrics

We as a group have decided to use a song called "Angels" by the artist Allison Crowe. The song is from a 8 track album called "Little Light." The genre of the song/album is pop/folk music. Below is a list of the 8 songs on the album:
  • Northern Lights
  • Angels
  • Disease
  • Little Light
  • Happy People
  • Hold Back
  • Choose to Be
  • Wedding Song
Below are the lyrics of the song we are using in our music video (Angels):

It took the edge off
at least that's what I thought at the time
but my mouth was open
and these words kept pouring out
and now my head is empty
and I wish it was just empty threatening
but all my angels seem to disappear
and leave me lonely singing

It's been so long since I've felt
not a victim of repression
so maybe I overdo
but take who this is or let me be

'cause all the angels in the world
couldn't hold a candle to me
and no one will ever love you like I do
my fire is inside
and the door is open so let it slide
and I'll just be who I am
and you just be a man
and I'll still love you anyways

My heart is broken
most of the time so don't let that bother you
and I learned to fight last time
so I know how to do what I have to do
though I am painfully fragile
I'll do my best not to let anyone see
and deathly cold
sometimes its easier to shut off than feel anything

it's been so long since I've felt
not a victim of repression
so maybe I overdo
but take who this is or let me be

'cause all the angels in the world
couldn't hold a candle to me
and no one will ever love you like i do
my fire is inside
and the door is open so let it slide
and I'll just be who I am
and you just be a man
and I'll still love you anyways

Even though you're a man
I'll love you anyways
Even when I don't understand

Potential Video Locations

As a group, we brainstormed various, possible locations for where we will be shooting our music video. We came up with the following:

Ribchester Park -  this being an ideal location because of the old-fashioned climbing frames and obscure sand pit area. We would have our model walking around the park, bare foot for an individual, unique look.

Car Bonnet - we would use my car and have the model sat/led on it, performing the song.

Supermarket - for this location we will have our model walking down a supermarket isle in barefoot. We believe that this is an original idea and hasn't been used in this context before, therefore this is why it will work so well.

Carousel - we would use the grande carousel on Blackpool Pleasure Beach for this particular setting. We feel that it has a vintage look to it, especially when we edit the shots, adding a Sepia effect.

Manchester Eye - we believe that this would be a great location for one of our shots. Although, we would have preferred  a more vintage, fare ground ride, yet with a suitable editing and effects it will look how we imagine.

Green Screen/Manchester City Centre - this is the shot for our chorus, therefore being important. Our idea consists of us filming in the centre of the city, capturing people walking by. We will then super impose this onto the Green Screen and quicken the pace. With the model stood infront of the screen miming the lyrics.

Old Caravan - near my house there is a derelict, caravan with bright coloured flowers painted on it. This would be extremely suitable for our video and therefore will have our model singing, walking barefoot around the caravan, capturing through various camera shots.

Basement - at home, my basement is dark and dilapidated, we will be putting up some bright, white fairy-lights and filming our model in this location.

Darwen Forest - we feel that this will be a really interesting location for our video. With the tall trees and quarries, it fits in with our song perfectly.

We hope to use all of the above locations for our music video, as they are all relevant to our song and genre.

Audience

Demographic Profiling

Here i am going to describe the demographic profiling. All products need an audience for the institution to target and so they can construct the product to appeal to them.

The way in which we define a target audience, known as GRASS.

Gender
Race
Age
Socio-Economic Status

As the media industries grew following World War 2 , a need to identify and target different segments of the audience grew in order to market their product to 'types' of people who would buy it. Therefore, the first type of audience profiling to develop was demographic which involved grouping the audience into smaller groups based upon variables such as age, gender, geographical area, class, economics, religion, sexuality etc. This method groups people according to the lives they lead or their social or economic status.

The Socio-Economic Status is split into six different segments, which are widely used in marketing. These are:

A - Higher Managerial, Administrative or professional eg Surgeon
B - Intermediate managerial, administrative or professional eg Teachers, Solicitors
C1 - Skilled non-manual e.g. Sales assistant, Shop Floor Supervisors
C2 - Skilled manual e.g. Electrician, Plumber
D - Semi-Skilled e.g. Assembly Line Workers, Cleaners
E - Unskilled, Pensioners and unemployed

Demographic Profiling can be extremely useful when finding out your target audience, however it can also be problematic as people in such groups, just because they have the same job , income or class does not always mean that they are the same type of people, interested in the same things.
As a result of these flaws research has moved away from demographic profiling to psychographic profiling which categorises consumers in terms of their needs rather than characteristics.

Psychographic Profiling

This type of profiling assumes the audience to be complex and to have certain needs which must be gratified. Adverts therefore aim to appeal to the audiences' emotions and psychological needs. This also includes Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs which clearly addresses audience segmentation along these lines.
An example of this is Project Phoenix, which was a UK based research project.

In 2003 Emap set out to research and map the fan economy. In 2003 they did a first research study, under the name of Project Phoenix. looking specifically at the attitudes towards music people between the ages of 15 and 39.
Specifically looking at different groups within it and the attitudes and behaviors in relation to the way the audience consumes music.
It surveyed 2,200 15-39 years olds, male and female equally.

They identified four main degrees of interest in music

  • Savants - For whom everything in life seems to be tied up with the music. They represent 9% of the 15-39 age group in 2003
  • Enthusiasts - music is a key part of the life but is balanced by other interests. Representing 16% of the 15-39 age group in 2003
  • Casuals - music plays a welcome role, but other things are far more important. Representing 26% of the 15-39 age group in 2003
  • Indifferents - would not lose much sleep if music ceased to exist. Representing 48% of the 15-39 age group in 2003
From this we have deduced that our target audience is Females 16-24 year olds, based upon Casuals as this seems to be the most popular target audience to aim our product at.

Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is a term describing the trend in the use of internet technology that aims to enhance creativity information sharing and most notably collaboration among users.

Interactivity
the term suggests a new version of the internet, it does not refer to update to any technically specifications... but to changes in the ways we use the web.

Looking at the current Uk top 40, our genre of music we are featuring in our media product is not featured in the music chart. This shows that our choice of music is not mainstream and their is not a wide market for our product however we believe with good marketing/distribution we would be able to launch our artist/music to the masses/a wider fan base because the British public are known to support/buy unique acts such as Joss Stone, Lilly Allen, Amy Winehouse, Sea-Sick Steve and Sandhi Tom.
